Before the sale of Overture to Yahoo, Overture designed and brought about a search engine by itself which was named AltaVista. While AltaVista was proving to be a major name and competition in the search engine domain, an algorithmic update introduced on October 25, 1999, brought about some major changes for the search engine such as the dumping of a long list of websites. This disastrous step proved to be instrumental in bringing about the downfall of the search engine coupled with brand mismanagement by the company. Such irrelevancy and heavy loss of market share and mindshare led the company to near bankruptcy before ultimately being taken over by Yahoo!
