The Penguin update was launched way back in April 2012 by Google in order to better equip their algorithm at cracking down on websites guilty of unnatural link profiles. With this game-changing update, the burden on links alone was lessened to some extent by also focusing on keyword stuffing classifiers which were given some major updates. While it was initially launched without a name and was simply called the spam update, subsequent blowback due to false positives led Google to give it a name and call it the Penguin update.
